TRUST AND GOOD REPUTATION: LESSONS FOR LIFE (PART I)

Trust is the currency of life; it builds bridges, creates opportunities, and leaves a legacy no wealth can buy.

The power to succeed in any field of endeavor lies in cultivating quality relationships. Regardless of who you are or what you pursue, people are essential to supporting your dreams, plans, and ambitions. Achieving any worthy goal in life requires a network of individuals, some divinely placed to offer advice, encouragement, and constructive criticism, while others may challenge you with disappointment or doubt, ultimately for your growth. Human relationships are indispensable, as reflected in the popular saying, “If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together.” The emphasis on going far and achieving greatness in any field centers on teamwork. For me, TEAM stands for “Together, Everyone Achieves More.” But how much people support you depends on how much they trust you.

Trust is the foundation, the central pillar, and the glue that holds successful human relationships together. Trust aside, being an indispensable asset opens doors, fosters meaningful connections, and inspires others to follow your example. Trust builds reputation, and a positive reputation attracts quality people into your life, influencing how long they stay to support your vision and mission. Wealth cannot buy lasting relationships because people of integrity will withdraw the moment they sense a questionable reputation.

Building a good reputation requires effort, patience, and consistency, while losing it can take just a single misstep or carelessness. Reputation is fragile, and it demands consistent behavior and performance to maintain. A single mistake, especially one that affects a highly influential person in your network, can undo years of hard work. As a football enthusiast, I often draw inspiration from goalkeepers when discussing topics like this. Consider a goalkeeper who delivers spectacular saves throughout 90 minutes but makes one costly error in the final moments of the match, resulting in a defeat or draw. The brilliance of their earlier performance is quickly overshadowed, and their credibility takes a significant hit.

Why Build a Good Reputation?

We live in a world where perceptions inevitably shape reality, making the need to build a positive reputation the most valuable investment you can make. As a matter of fact, a good reputation defines how others perceive your character, abilities, and contributions, and it influences the level and depth of opportunities, relationships, and trust that you will experience in life’s journey. Below are few compelling reasons to prioritize building a good reputation in your life

1) Increased Visibility and Credibility
A positive reputation brings you to the attention of others in your field. People are more likely to recommend and endorse you based on the trust you’ve built. Just as we repeatedly patronize excellent service providers and recommend them to others, a strong reputation ensures your value is recognized and rewarded. Keep in mind that your reputation comes before you, creating opportunities that mere effort cannot.

2) Protection During Difficult Times
A good reputation acts as an invisible advocate during challenging moments. While you cannot prevent others from maligning you, your reputation can inspire people to rise to your defense, even without your knowledge. It acts as a shield, safeguarding your integrity in a world where public opinion often leads to premature judgment. Remember that a positive reputation is like a shield; it protects you when you cannot protect yourself.

3) Inspiration to Others
A solid reputation makes you a role model, inspiring others to strive for excellence. People look up to individuals with integrity and success, seeking motivation and guidance to achieve their own goals. Understand that your actions are the blueprint for others’ aspirations; a positive reputation turns those actions into lasting inspiration.

A Personal Lesson

In January 2016, I experienced the value of reputation firsthand. Facing financial difficulties after losing years of savings to failed investments, I approached Bright Arthur, a printing press operator, to print 3,000 copies of my books. Despite not having the full payment upfront, Bright agreed to my proposal, taking a 40% down payment and trusting me to pay the balance after delivery.

Surprisingly, Bright rejected the idea of a formal agreement. Whether his trust stems from pity or a recommendation from my friend, it still baffles me. He remarked, “If you fail to pay back the money, you will lose more than I will.” I can recover the money, but your damaged reputation will be much harder to rebuild.”

This encounter taught me a profound lesson about the value of reputation. Fortunately, I fulfilled my promise, and our business relationship grew into a friendship. Over the years, Bright’s support and recommendations have significantly benefited my career as a self-publisher.

Trust and a positive reputation take years of consistent integrity, sacrifice, and effort to build but can be destroyed within a minute. In times of uncertainty, your reputation becomes your greatest lawyer and advocate, and trust ensures your words and actions hold weight and relevance to people. Strive to cultivate both because they are practically the currency of influence and the legacy you leave behind in both personal and professional life. They are priceless, as Proverbs 22:1 reminds us: “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor is rather than silver and gold.” Commit to nurturing these qualities, and you will inspire hope, build enduring relationships, and achieve greatness.
